Clean lines, minimalist design and industrial touches at HOP's Public Space in Amsterdam

All photography by Michael Cerrone

Amsterdam studio, HOP, recently designed the interiors for Public Space, a new speciality food and coffee shop in the rapidly developing North side of the Dutch capital.

Public had got its hands on a beautiful empty space on the ground floor of the BeMine building, which needed everything from flooring, ceilings and interior walls to electricity, plumbing and bespoke furniture. HOP designed every last bit, including the custom ceiling lighting.

Creating an open plan layout with a centralised and low bar to "achieve openness and transparency", the space is built up out of lively texturised floors, walls, ceilings and bar cladding. The common chairs and tables featured throughout are of elegant Italian design and complement the overriding minimalist and industrial approach.

HOP also created contrasting "vintage islands" with retro (mostly Danish) furniture, breaking up the space into several zones. These islands pop up in three different locations and are bordered by eclectic-style custom-sized carpets by Desso.

We especially love the birch plywood communal table with charcoal finish, built around two six-metre high trees that sit inside two huge Elho plant pots. Plus the vintage furniture from Vivre Interieur in Nijmegen and Neef Louis and the IJ-hallen in Amsterdam. See more of HOP's latest work at hop-amsterdam.com.
