Fashion designer Roksanda Ilinčić applies her hand to a curated space of art and interiors in The Penthouse at Gasholders London.

The landmark residence is built within a refurbished triplet of Grade II-listed, cast iron gasholder guide frames in the heart of London’s King’s Cross.

With her own background in applied arts and architecture, Roksanda lends her artistic and unique aesthetic to the three-bedroom duplex penthouse. The result is an exquisite play on her signature sculptural form, textural depth and unusual colour combinations. An elegant blend of furniture, art, ceramics, books and objet, the apartment reveals Roksanda’s passion for diverse disciplines in design and the arts from a female perspective, creating a conversation between the rooms and those walking through them.

By establishing mise-en-scènes throughout the space, Roksanda puts emphasis on women makers, both established, contemporary and emerging. Murals, artwork and textiles by Paris based artist Caroline Denervaud act as backdrops for furniture by Lina Bo Bardi and Charlotte Perriand. Objet and ceramics include works by Australian ceramicist Alana Wilson, Berlin-based potter Christine Roland and Londoner Annette Lantsoght. Textiles created by Kvadrat cover a Cordemeijer Cleopatra daybed in the Sun Room and colourful bespoke upholstered beds with added texture from Lena Rewell’s merino wool blankets.

Postmodern and Mid-century modern pieces, a coat rack from the Netherlands, a dining table by Angelo Mangiarotti and Pierre Jeanneret chairs from the 1950s are carefully sourced finds that come as second nature to the designer. Considered lighting appears in the form of a graphic Francois Châtain Floor Lamp which contrasts with an undulating, bulbous ceramic sculpture by Enylee Parker and twisting ribbon lamps by Claire Norcross.

Memorable touches include handpicked scents by Lyn Harris of Perfumer H and curated literature from some of Roksanda’s closest confidants and inspirations including Eva Rothschild, Marina Abramovic, Alice Rawsthorn and Valeria Napoleone. Textural bindings and covers include retrospectives too by women that inspire Roksanda’s work; Phylidia Barlow, Roni Horn, Barbara Hepworth, Anni Albers, Isa Gensken and Marlene Dumas. On bedside tables, there are texts by Patti Smith, Nell Dunn and Joan Didion, bedtime reading for the woman who dreams big in Roksanda’s world.

Each of the nine elegant penthouses at Gasholders has its own dedicated roof garden, a discrete and sophisticated exterior space created by RHS Chelsea Flower Show gold-medal winning landscape architecture practice, Dan Pearson Studio, with views of King’s Cross and beyond. Roksanda worked with Suzanne Wallgren on a bespoke garden design for the rooftop of the apartment, selecting a striking Pallas Table designed by Konstantin Grcic and Gitta Gschventer’s concrete stools cast from moulds based on paper bags to inject further personality into the space. Inside foliage, plants and florals by Simone Gooch of Fjura provide moments of still life.

Roksanda Ilinčić commented: “As a previous resident of Kings Cross, one of the first people to build a home here when the first regeneration took place, the Gasholders were an iconic landmark that always captured my attention and one which I found particularly beautiful. To be able revisit a neighbourhood that felt so familiar to me and which now hosts the institution which moulded me as a designer, Central Saint Martins, felt like an exciting opportunity. Architecture, art and design are disciplines which consistently inspire my own collections. This project has created the opportunity to expand my own ideas about creating a true reflection of my own aesthetic, beyond fashion.”
