Part of the product portfolio of Material Source Studio Manchester Partner, Surface Matter, Mother of Pearl by Plasticiet is a material made from polycarbonate.
Through an intricate, hand made process, it is transformed into a futuristic, marble like product.
A Dutch Design Week Award winner at the 2025 edition, Mother of Pearl furniture pieces were made in collaboration with Jil Sander, a partnership initiated by Casper Mueller Kneer Architects (CMK) for the brand's retail stores.
Following many experiments, the bending of the sheets stood out. And each new Jil Sander store was equipped with stools, benches and vitrines entirely made from Mother of Pearl.

The bended feature was implemented in multiple facets of the retail stores in the form of display podiums. Often objects like these are made from stone, but recycled plastic is quietly taking over these spots without compromising on quality. Plastic is a key feature in each store, and it tells the story of how retailers are slowly moving towards more refined sustainable solutions.
“To us, Plasticiet means acknowledging plastic as a raw material to build from, considering it as much a part of our natural cycle as stone is”, explained the Plasticiet team.
It was back in 2022 when CMK Architects first reached out to Plasticiet to explore their Mother of Pearl material and its range of application possibilities. And now on show at Forward Furniture at “de Caai” during DDW2025, the collection launched in the form of cylinders and cuboids with rounded features in dark green, light green, blue and red.
This is just the start though, with many more colours and shapes to come...
