Jasper Sanders + Partners completes The Tannery - student living in Leicester.

One of several recent completed projects by Jasper Sanders + Partners, The Tannery comprises contemporary student accommodation in Leicester.

Jasper Sanders + Partners designed the scheme during the first lockdown, with the unwavering success of The Tannery being largely down to the creative synergy between their designers. Despite not meeting face to face for months, as working from home was sanctioned across the UK, the team communicated ideas daily via Teams and FaceTime throughout the design process, creating an interior which was responsive in real-time to the unfolding pandemic.

"We knew our attitude to design and the environment was going to adapt following Covid19. As a result, we have become more minimal in our approach, but taking into account that “less is more, until less becomes not enough". Prominence was placed on achieving the most with the least material, and attention paid to creating a strong community and culture for the residents", explains Jasper.

Ensuring the interiors complemented the stunning external brickwork by Tim Groom Architects, Jasper Sanders + Partners left ceilings and services exposed, combining raw architectural finishes with softer and warmer features as highlighted within the concierge lounge, were a soft green Ultrafabrics faux-leather sits against a back-drop of raw plaster. The Tannery’s brand identity incorporates a motif in the communal areas to reflect the emblem of the pandemic, and the industrial railway arches adjacent, with an aim to promote a feeling of community and friendship amongst residents.

The paired back minimalist aesthetic feels like a premium product, with a crackling fire visual, a giant tree and shelving that's akin to a rural lodge. Underpinning the entire scheme is Jasper's fervent dedication to more efficient use of space, which in itself is driven by reducing waste and making life better.
