Blast Studio is a London-based design company transforming urban waste into high-performance biomaterials for interiors, including panels and furniture.
Collecting used coffee cups by bike from coffee spots around West London, Blast Studio create 3dprintable biomaterial from London's coffee cup waste, which is then inoculated with mycelium, the root network of fungi. The fungi infused biomaterial is later 3d printed into unique organic shapes designed to help the growth of the organism.
Blast Studio explores how nature and technology can come together to transform urban waste int structures that grow, evolve, and nourish. Two unique 2.2 meter high columns, inspired by the cross sections of tree trunks, were printed for the window display of an optician store in Belgium, designed by the studio WeWantMore.
In addition, Cupsan is a strong, versatile material made from compressed recycled waste. Cupsan is designed for demanding interior applications - from wall panels to furniture and cladding. Its natural stone-like and terrazzo-like surface offers a soft, organic look and feel. Compatible with CNC, standard woodworking tools, and most workshop techniques, it’s ready to be shaped, drilled, and assembled like traditional boards.
Blast Studio's recent collaboration with Opendesk features Cupsan in forest green on Opendesk's plywood phone booth.
