c2:concepts' strapline is "considered, creative". And when looking at the team's projects, it's entirely obvious as to why.

Combining practicality with aesthetic flair, the workplace schemes that c2:concepts conjures up are beautiful and useable in equal measure.

Heading up the creative team in Glasgow is design director, Jean Camplisson. With over three decades of interior design experience, including four years at DEGW and 18 years at Haa Design, it's safe to say she knows more than a thing or two about her craft.

Described as being a "designers’ designer", Jean is respected for her creativity and famed for her "ability to conjure up a back-of-the-envelope concept in seconds." Since joining the c2:concepts' team in 2014, Jean has further developed her expertise in being a "practical and inspiring team leader", ensuring client aspirations are met across every project.

As we prepare to open the doors to our own Material Source Studio in c2:concepts' home city of Glasgow, we felt there was no better time than the present to catch up with Jean...

Firstly, how did you get started in design?

"My Danish mum had a huge influence on me - from an early age I was blown away by the fact that everything in Denmark appeared to be beautifully designed and minimal. As a wedding present in the 30s, my Danish grandparents, 'Mormor & Morfar' were given a full set of solid silver Georg Jensen 'Pyramid' cutlery which is still on sale as it is timeless. Design-wise I am still influenced by the simplicity of Scandinavian design and will always love it."

Can you introduce us to c2:concepts?

"Glasgow and London-based c2:concepts is an award-winning corporate interior design studio creating contemporary workspaces. The team works closely with a range of businesses and organisations, designing people-friendly, accessible, creative and environmentally-conscious working environments.

"Be it global financial companies, public sector organisations, commercial enterprises, or property management firms, c2 has a collaborative and imaginative approach. Listening to clients explain their needs is an integral part of the design process and our ability to relate to, and involve, people, is central to our success. Established in 2003, c2 has a strong reputation and is well-respected in the industry and marketplace."

As design director, what does your role there entail?

"Since 2014, I have been a design director for c2:concepts in Scotland where I lead a team of designers and put together proposals for a wide range of prospective clients. As a leading design house, an important part of our focus is keeping abreast of developments in the industry and coming up with innovative responses to the changing world of work. I love doing free-hand drawings of potential designs for pitches and am passionate about investing in, and developing, our very talented team."

You’re based in Glasgow, what’s the design scene like there?

"It's a lovely city to work in and it's also great to be back in the office. We would love to see more things happening in the city with design events where we can collaborate with other designers - hence why we are really excited about the Material Source Studio opening - it's a first for Glasgow."

With Material Source Studio Scotland on the horizon, is there anything you’re most looking forward to using the space for?

"I am looking forward to being able to view lots of materials and finishes in person rather than online and also the design events are something we are all looking forward to."

Your focus is workplace – a sector massively impacted by the pandemic. What’s changed the most?

"Some companies are reducing the size of their offices and are happy that their staff work in a hybrid fashion. Some are looking to make their office spaces more collaborative and inviting with often a 'domestic' feel to encourage staff to come in to the office at least 2 or 3 days a week."

So there's been a lean towards workplace interiors more often found in residential schemes?

"Yes there certainly has, people are looking for softer, lighter and warmer tones that feel like home rather than the greys and blacks that were popular. Many companies are looking for smaller quirky spaces with exposed services that don't have a 600x600 grid suspended ceiling with flat cold LED light fittings."

Are there any trends impacting your designs currently?

"Sustainability in products and furniture & biophilia are high on people's agendas. Timbers, soft warm lighting with a blend of subtle complementing colours."

Do you have a favourite material to work with? Or any brands/designers we should keep an eye out for?

"I like the very matt laminates and the huge range of acoustic products that are on the market now. Loving products that are made from recycled materials. We are always on the lookout for stunning and unusual feature lights for projects."

What are you working on currently?

"We are working on a number of exciting projects in Scotland and in London at the moment."

And what’s next?

"We are really interested to see what is next in colours and materials and are constantly looking at new designs and trends."
