Why Sylan is turning to bamboo for commercial washroom design.

Why Sylan is turning to bamboo for commercial washroom design.

As sustainability targets continue to influence your specification decisions across commercial interiors, Sylan is constantly exploring alternative materials that combine environmental responsibility with long-term durability.

One material gaining significant traction is bamboo.

Sylan Introduces a Bamboo Toilet Cubicle System

Now showcased at Material Source Studio Manchester, the latest bamboo toilet cubicle system from Sylan Washrooms demonstrates how rapidly renewable materials are beginning to reshape even the most performance-driven interior sectors.

Traditionally, commercial washroom design has relied heavily on laminates, solid grade materials and hardwood-derived products. Bamboo offers a different approach — one that brings a natural aesthetic alongside strong environmental credentials.

Reducing Environmental Impact with Bamboo

Unlike slow-growing hardwoods, bamboo reaches maturity in approximately four to five years and can be harvested without causing deforestation. Once cut, the plant naturally regenerates from its existing root system, removing the need for replanting and allowing continuous growth. Combined with its rapid growth cycle and high yield, this makes bamboo one of the most renewable material resources currently available for commercial washroom applications.

One of bamboo’s major environmental advantages is its ability to absorb and store large amounts of carbon dioxide as it grows. During growth, the plant absorbs and stores significant quantities of CO₂, contributing to lower embodied carbon when compared with more traditional material choices. According to Sylan, 5m³ of bamboo can store approximately 8,300kg of CO₂ over the material’s lifecycle.

For designers working on projects targeting BREEAM, LEED, Green Star or other sustainability frameworks, materials such as bamboo are becoming increasingly relevant within wider conversations around responsible specification.

Balancing Sustainability with Commercial Performance

What makes this particular application interesting is the balance between sustainability and commercial performance. Washroom environments demand robustness, dimensional stability and longevity — particularly in high-traffic settings such as workplaces, hospitality venues and public buildings.

Sylan Bamboo Engineered for Commercial Washroom Applications

The Sylan toilet cubicle system uses a solid bamboo core construction with a lacquered finish, giving the material a warm, tactile quality while maintaining the structural integrity required for demanding commercial use. Natural grain variation across the panels adds visual depth and individuality to each installation.

Alongside the material itself, the detailing has been engineered with a deliberately refined aesthetic. Invisible fixings, flush-integrated lock systems and a choice of stainless steel, bronze, brass or black ironmongery allow the cubicles to integrate comfortably within contemporary interior schemes.

A Future-Focused Material for Washroom Specification

As commercial interiors continue to move toward lower-impact material palettes, bamboo is emerging as more than a niche sustainability statement. Its combination of renewability, durability and natural character positions it as a serious contender for future-focused washroom specification across multiple sectors — including spaces where performance expectations are particularly high.

The Sylan Bamboo material is now available to explore at Material Source Studio, 1 Federation Street, Manchester. Plan your visit.
